Off the rails

Why a garage door comes off its track

A garage door off track has left the metal rails that guide it, usually on one side. The rollers on the edge of each panel ride inside those tracks, so when a roller pops out, a track bends, or a cable lets go, the door twists, jams or hangs crooked. A door in that state is dangerous to move because its weight is no longer carried evenly.

The common causes are ordinary. A car bumps the door or the track. A broken spring or cable drops one side. A roller that has worn down and loosened slips out of the rail. A track bracket works loose and lets the rail drift away from the jamb. The opener keeps pulling, and that can make a small slip into a bent track or a damaged panel.

If your door is off track, do not run the opener and do not try to push the door back in. Leave it where it is and keep people clear. We reset the door, straighten or replace the track, and swap rollers that are worn. If a spring or cable broke at the same time, we handle that visit too, and spring repair is often part of the same job.

Before we move it

What we check before we move the door

Springs and cables

We look first for a snapped cable or a broken spring, because if one side lost its support, resetting the door without fixing that would only drop it again.

The track itself

We check each rail for bends, dents and gaps, and whether it runs plumb on the jamb and level overhead. A track that is only slightly out can be straightened. A crushed one is replaced.

Rollers

Worn, cracked or flat-spotted rollers are a common cause, and garage door roller replacement is easy to do while the door is open. We replace the set that is failing instead of a single roller.

Brackets and hinges

Loose track brackets and bent hinges let the rail move. We tighten, replace and re-square the hardware before closing up.

The panels

A door that has twisted can crease a panel. We check for damage and tell you if a panel needs replacing.

Track and roller help

Garage door track and roller questions

Can I put my garage door back on the track myself?
We advise against it. The door is heavy, and when one side has come out, the cables and springs can still be under tension. Forcing it can bend the track further or drop the door. Leave it and call.
Is it safe to use the opener on a door that is off track?
No. The opener will keep pulling and can twist the door, crush a panel or strip its drive. Disconnecting or unplugging it, if you can do that safely, and keeping people clear of the door is the safest approach until it is seen.
Do I need new tracks or can they be fixed?
It depends on the damage. A slightly bent rail can often be straightened and re-aligned. A creased, crushed or twisted track is replaced because it will not guide the rollers cleanly again.
How do I know my rollers are worn?
A door that grinds, rattles or shakes is the usual sign, along with rollers that wobble in the track or have visible flat spots. Replacing the full set stops the noise and protects the track.
What drives the price of a track or roller job?
Whether the track is straightened or replaced, how many rollers and brackets are involved, and whether a spring, cable or panel was damaged too. You get an upfront quote before any work begins, and our repairs are backed by a parts-and-labor warranty.
How long does it take to fix a door that is off track?
A reset and a roller replacement are usually done in one visit. If the track is badly damaged or the door needs a new panel, we explain that before starting. If the door is beyond repair, a new garage door may be worth comparing.
